What's the best price guide you know of?

Is the Red Book the best price guide? Just because its the best-selling doesn't mean it's the best, does it?

It's the most widely accepted and authoritative, as well as comprehensive. I think that makes it the best.

I never use the Red Book, but what guide to use depends on what you are collecting or want to look up. The Cherrypickers Guide is very useful for varieties. But if you need more indepth information each coin will have books or guides on that denomination for example Indian cents has several books such as The Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide - 2nd. edition in 4 volumes by Richard Snow.

That's good, because I have a 2008 Red Book.

The Red Book is out dated when it goes to print every year. Subscribe to The Grey Sheet if you need accurate pricing.

Silver Drum....

If you don't know it, the "Red Book" reports retail prices...what a collector can expect to pay a dealer.

The "Blue Book" reports what a dealer will pay a collector or someone else.

But as posted...prices will vary depending on a lot of things. Shop around for what you want to buy or sell & find the best price.

ebay search is best for 'actual' current retail pricing.

greysheet is a good buying guide and can be downloaded.
I don't subscribe, I just buy it every 3 months or so.

You can download it here,

A free online price guide is found at http://www.pcgs.com/prices/

I think the prices at pcgs tend to run a little high and may be retail prices.

I agree with previous posters who recommended greysheet. If you go to a coin show, most dealers will have a grey sheet and their pricing will be relative to the price in the greysheet - a little more than the "bid" price if you're buying from them, and a little less than bid if you're selling to them.
